		<description>About a Course


Design for interaction can be applied in various areas such as professional industry practice, media art, communications, HCI research, and emerging technologies. At its core, design for interaction entails designing the aesthetics, experience, expectation, and behavior of a product while considering its relations with humans, digital information, and the physical surroundings. 

Interfaces of a product will constantly evolve as technology advances, and producing the best design solution or the right vision will always be an interesting challenge. Through seeing, inventing, hacking, designing, and ideating innovations, we’ll focus on thinking outside the box and providing meaningful designs for today and tomorrow in diverse fields.

Interaction designers develop expertise in envisioning preferred futures by reimagining how products, services, and systems behave. They work primarily with the narrative material to understand the current state of things and proposed futures that could and should be.

In this course, students will approach interaction design from the perspective of human-centered design and learn ways to apply computational design in a creative context. Students will be introduced to the following prototyping methods for designing interactions:


1. SCALABLE INTERFACEInvestigate various interactive platforms (e.g., Screens to Objects, Mobile to Print, Environments to Digital space) for Interaction design.
2.&#38;nbsp;DIMENSION OF INTERACTIONSInvestigate various interaction mediums through (e.g., Voice interaction and Tangible interaction) digitally-enabled physical prototyping methods.
Course Structure
This project focuses on hands-on activities approach prototyping for interaction design from multiple perspectives. By studying various types of Interactions &#38;amp; Interfaces, you will learn how to integrate interaction design into our everyday experiences with meaningful insights. There will be an emphasis on making as a way of thinking in the design process.

 
The last memory to take with you to the next universe.
Design a system/environment/behavior that you miss the most from earth.
Imagine If you are moving to the Moon and never returning to the earth; what would you take with you to the Moon? What would you miss the most if you were far away?

We will look into the everyday lives affected by complex/simple natural phenomena and behaviors that are sometimes unnoticed, immersive, delightful, informative, useful, or useless. Identify what’s meaningful or meaningless to you by approaching systems such as social services from various perspectives; the teams will be encouraged to discover an opportunity where nature systems can add value to how we live in our surroundings.

	HOW WE STARTED
	This project started with “dog scratching.”Dogs scratch various things including doors, humans, or even themselves when they want something. To mimic this behavior, we made a simple scratching device with a servo motor, clothes hooks, foam boards, styrofoam balls, wood sticks, etc.

	EAT-SCRATCH INTERACTION
	What would be the most memorable interactive moment between human and dog in terms of the action of scratching? Our answer was -“when you eat something.”To make “you eat(input), then dog scratch(output)” possible, we added a load-cell that measure the weight of the biscuits on it so that if you try to eat them, a paw starts to scratch you. The scratching part was also developed into a wearable device which you can wear on your leg, arm, or basically anywhere within the length of the belt.

	INNER STRUCTURE
	The biggest challenge we met was to make the scratching device compact and light enough to wear on the body.Designing the inner structure was the first step for this. To make the rotational motion of the servo motor into the linear motion, we designed our own parts and made them with diverse materials like plastic, wood and acrylic.

	FORM &#38;amp; METHOD
	The next step was to find the best form and method to wear. 
We designed the device considering not only the aesthetic form but also the inner structure and the&#38;nbsp;assembling method so that we can easily assemble, disassemble and repair it. The body of the device was 3D-printed several times in PLA, ABS A-100, and finally in resin. In addition, “how to wear” was also studied by exploring different parts such as Velcro, buckle, ribbon, etc.

	We wanted users to choose their favorite paw, use it, and&#38;nbsp;change it into another one whenever they want while using the device.To give each paw its own characteristics,&#38;nbsp;we explored various materials and ready-made products. Here’s each parts and final materials of them:- Inner shapes : Hand-carved foam board- Outer covers : Fake-fur, fake-leather, micro-fiber rag- Claws : 3D-printed object- Soles : Button, nose of doll, plastic object

	SNAP TO THE DEVICE
	
Finding the best way to stick the paws to the main device was a big challenge. The paws must be able to be&#38;nbsp;fixed to the main device while using them and easily taken away after using them. We put Neodymium magnet in the both joining parts of the main device and the paws.
Since the paws have to fit in the device in the right direction, we put a small bump in the joining part of the paw and same-sized hole in the main device to provide affordance.&#38;nbsp;This small part&#38;nbsp;constrain user from assembling it in the wrong way at the same time.

	A PLATE WITH SWITCH
	Users have to put food on the load-cell which measures the weight of it and commands the paw to scratch. We covered the top of it with wood which is usually used as material for plates and the rest with sanded translucent acrylic to give affordance.
In addition, we used “barking dog” and “sleeping dog” as signifier of the switch instead of “on” and “off” to remind the users that this device is not a traditional product, but a unique one for specific use and situation.

Dyeing balsam on fingernails is one of the traditional Korean customs. There is a myth that if the dye remains before the first snow falls, your love will come true. While waiting for your first love, emotions like excitement, courage, and hope are felt. Adopting the meanings and the feelings of the act of dyeing balsam, Signal lab 10V3 was designed.

ABOUT
Signal Lab 10V3 is a device that combines balsam, the metaphor of first love, and the lyrical emotion, pounding feeling, and eye contact that is a signal of affection. Like how a balsam gets dyed on little fingernails, when a man and a woman make eye contact, the balsam water drips onto the white cloth, creating a lyrical feeling.

1. A women participant holds an eyewear attached to the device to make an eye contact with three random men.

According to Edward T. Hall’s theory of ‘Personal space’, there are four different zones of interpersonal space. While applying this theory, we adopted two zones. An intimate zone, which is within 45cm, is reserved for close friends, lovers, children and close family members. A friend zone of within 120cm, is used for conversations with friends, to chat with associates, and in group discussions. Entering somebody's personal space is normally an indication of familiarity and sometimes intimacy. Signal lab added another zone between friend zone and intimate zone, setting its distance as 80cm.

The user interacts to make input through the interface, eyewear. They can see the men through the circular part holding the eyewear stick. Here, the first signifier is a circular part and the affordance is seeing through it to make an eye contact. The second signifier is a stick, which provides affordance of holding eyewear in hand.&#38;nbsp;

Building a mechanism
After many trials, such as a tilt sensor and a temperature sensor, we chose an ultrasonic sensor and wrote a code that changes the angle of the servo motor depending on the distance.

Initial prototpying (Trial and Error)

We tried prototyping a physical mechanism that can control water using various methods. We found the most appropriate method among numerous attempts and applied it to design the inner structure.

Mock-up

In order to mock-up the product in its actual scale, we bent the pipe and welded it. Also, a hole was drilled in the bottom part and the space for the wires. Then, it got sprayed white. The sphere was done by 3D printing, and we worked on some finishing.

This is an interaction project that takes the most precious memory from Earth.
We focused on the interaction to remind extremely personal yet relatable moment with the lover.

Flutter was inspired by the memory of sitting on a bench
and stroking lover’s hand while cherry blossoms flutter.

We focused on how to retrieve the moment of ‘the cherry blossom falling’
for a person who is left alone in the next universe.

Scene #1
Left behind alone in the next universe, a man is sitting alone on the bench suffered from loneliness.
He is fantasizing about his old memories, sitting next to his lover on a bench, touching hands.


Scene #2
While he savors the smooth surface of the input interface, the piezo sensor detects his touch and
 activates the vibration module and heat film to simulate the heartbeat and the warmth of the lover’s hand.


Scene #3After few seconds of delay to enjoy, interaction occurs between input and output.
DC motors in the ouput on the wall operate, causing the cherry blossom petals to flutter.

Getting snowed with falling cherry blossoms, he recalls the old memories with his lover.
He can focus on the touchings of the petals on his face as if she came back and touching him.

	1. Piezo buzzer detects the touch of stroking.2. Heat film gets hot.3. Vibration module operates heartbeat.4. DC motor blows the cherryblossom petals.
	

We were concerned about the method to deliver the situation we wanted. We tried to set our input as a signifier giving you affordance to touch. We selected warmth and pulse as an output from the input device to our hand. When it is touched, the interation occurs in the output device. The piezo buzzer in the input detects the touch and the heat film and vibration sensor operate. And then the DC motor operates and the cherry blossoms fall as the output.

We needed some breeze to make a flutter, so we built some DC motors
which are activated by a pressure sensor. We used these DC motors later, 
but we couldn’t use the pressure sensor, because it couldn’t detect the
touch in the input device because of the thickness.

To simulate the heartbeat from the input device, we built some vibration
modules. We reproduced the pulse with High &#38;amp; Low signals, and we also 
tried to make it beat faster or harder when you hold it.

To convey the warmth of touch while touching it, we built the heat film.We made the input surface thin to conduct warmth well&#38;nbsp;and found the best temperature suits with human warmth.

We showed the fluttering moments through the wearable device. But it was hard to adjust the angle with proper fallings, so we needed the impact with broader ouput.


We made a cylinder to fly the petals in it, but it gathered so well and didn’t float well. We needed some more &#38;nbsp;powerful DC motors.


We used servo motors to drop the petals
but, they gathered and fell off too directly. 
We couldn’t feel any mood in here.

	With all those studies above, we concluded that we should make it scatter from above through strong DC motors to take a moment we wanted. So, we designed the wall-mounted device with an air duct and made an airflow and angle of fluttering as we imagined.
	

Input Study 1 - How to take the lover's hand back

Embodied situation of brushing &#38;amp; holding hands together by using&#38;nbsp;the
ultrasonic sensor. If your hand gets close to the clay hand, it moves
because of the servo motor, and it touches your hand. You can grab
the hand and feel the purse through the vibration.

We planned to reappear a ticklish romance by approaching hand behindfrom curtain. It has strong signifier to touch, but the unnatural interaction 
occurred because of it's real form &#38;amp; awkward posture.

We tried many variations of input device. Although it doesn't resemble hands, we designed a soft and touching curve so that the form itself serves as a signifier. As a result, the device has an affordance that the user desire to stroke gently.

‘ Sunrise ’ + ‘ Neckride ’


What is your most precious memory that
you would take with you to the next universe?

This question reminded us of a sentimental childhood memory
with dad. By designing a wearable device for two people,
we wanted to make users feel the moment of watching sunrise
while riding on dad’s shoulders. It’s a moment of dad’s sacrifice
to show the beautiful world to me, and
sharing of the same moment by praying together.

Arduino study- Sun module

To implement motion of sunrise when praying, touch sensor and servo motor were initially used. However, as we conducted the experiment, we found that a slower motor would be appropriate to make it feel like an actual sunrise, then&#38;nbsp;

decided to use a stepper motor.

In order to make the sunrise video on the smartphone screen turn on when praying, the motion was first produced with Figma 

illustration. 

It worked well when using the photoresistor 

as an input, but when using the touch sensor, it was impossible to control the transparency of the illustration only with 0 and 1 recognition, so we had to find another way.Eventually, we found a way to control the keyboard to play the video using Arduino Leonardo, and made a new sunrise video with c4d.

- Window


(Joystick + Continuous rotation servo motor)


To implement a motion in which the window goes down when the pedal is pressed, we initially used a regular servo motor to make the window fall down. Then, in order to make the window free to move up and down, we attatched a 

3d printed

device 

to the body part which enables linear motion along the rail. The&#38;nbsp;

angle of rotation of&#38;nbsp;

servo motor 

was so small that it was difficult for the window to come down completely. So we used continuous rotation servo motor that rotates 360 degrees.

Form study
- Initial works

(Material: Foamboard)

We designed
a way to wear the product over the shoulders using a foamboard.


It helped set 

the approximate size and height of the product 

 and the location of the window.


- Intermediate works

(Material: Plaster bandages)

To make it more natural to wear on the body, plaster bandages melted in water were attached directly to the body to cast the shoulders and back.
It helped to create an ergonomic form of wearable device.

The results of the previous mock-up process were simplified and organized through 3d modeling.
We refined the body shape through modeling and produced the entire frame and sun module with 3d printing. To reduce the weight of the main body, 

the parts were divided 

and perforated, and assembled after printing.

Background

Beloved ones clean each other's ears. Parents clean their child’s ear and lovers also clean each other’s ear. When someone cleans our ear, beyond just cleaning our ear, we feel a strange sensation. It's more than a just intimacy or sexual stimulation, it has a strange tension. We analyze this tension results of multiple elements of tickling, pleasure, excitement, shame, and stability. The sense of breath that touches ear, the sound, the feelings of thighs, and the texture and the moisture of the hands create an indescribable feeling. We can’t easily forget this feeling. We want to recreate and reconstruct the senses in this memory when we go to the next universe.

How it works

This project have 1 input, and 2 outputs.

    
Input
&#38;nbsp;Adjust the view filter in your eye position.
When adjusted, the proximity sensor would be activated.


Output 1-1
The actuator moves and would make the tactile kit be in your ear position.


Output 1-2
The high angle activates the tilt sensor, and the servo motor operates to stimulate your ear.


Output 2
The fan motor is also activated and makes a regular blow of breathe.

Process
1. Arduino Experiments
 We mapped out the most proper input &#38;amp; output through arduino. Also, we studied where to put arduino device based on design.

	Output 1-1Actuator
	At first, we tried to use arduino servo motor for Output 1-1, but we found out that the movement was not that proper for this project. So, we used actuator to make the movement. By using actuator, we found that the movement became much smoother compared to the servo motor.

Servo motor
	After the actuator is fully operated, we tried to use servo motor, where the tactile kit would be hanged, to stimulate ears. Since the servo moter had to work remotely (because there was no space for other sensors), we tried to use tilt sensor as an input. The angle of the head part would make tilt sensor activated, and the servo motor would work.

	We connected fan motor with tilt sensor. And also, we tried to make the most proper power of the breathe by cutting the fan step by step in a specific length.

2. Tactile Kit Texture Study

We feel lots of things when someone clean our ears. This softness, itching, pain, and moisture of hands are expressed through various forms and materials. In addition to the round and pointed shapes, ductility and weight of the material are considered to provide a variety of touch. In addition, the finish of the product is made of silicon, resin, brass, and cloth to reproduce various textures that can be felt by hands and skin.

3. Product Form Study

Contrary to its friendly and warm-feeling function, the product's form is very minimal and perfected to create a sense of separation. The gap between form and function gives user a strange feeling and a strange tension. This can create a more immersive user experience.

Research
	We decided to make a pillow ourselves to make a sense of unity. Therefore, we visited Dongdaemun Market to find a cloth which is appropriate for this project. Then, we sewed it by ourselves.

If we had no choice but to leave Earth and live on Mars, what moment should we take from Earth? 
Pulse is a set of devices to recreate the moment of skipping stone at dawn. 
Once you swing the stone, the image of waves will be projected on the wall with the collabo of a water tank, mirror, and sharp lighting.

Signifier &#38;amp; Affordance


The wave pattern on the rock works as a signifier on which side to grab it. 
Also, the rock itself gives affordance of holding with one hand, with the pebble-like shape and the handy size.

The action to operate the set of devices is, swinging one's arm grabbing the rock.

Output


As feedbacks of input action, an LED turns on, and solenoid valves open serially, making operation sound. Waterdrops from these valves make the wave. 
This will be projected on the wall with the mirror on the bottom of the water tank.

Concept

	We were inspired by the moment of skipping stones by the calm river at dawn.
When skipping stones, the heavy stone slides on the water and leaves a wave on it.
We found this image somehow gives the feeling of surreality and decided to take this to Mars.


The First Prototype

On the first working prototype, we used servo motors, acrylic pipes, beads, and an ultrasonic sensor. 
After that try, we were able to find two things to improve.Water drops will produce smoother waves rather than beads since they can merge into the water.The ultrasonic sensor is fixed at one point, thus it is not a suitable option to sense a swing. It is much more natural to detect an audience’s movement with the rock with a gyro sensor because it follows the audience’s hand. 

Dropping Water with the Solenoid Valve


To make each drop of water, a solenoid valve and relay module were used.

We thought about how to express the endless wavelength of water that can be seen by a stone skipping more effectively. Instead of throwing the pebble directly, the input was set in the way of swinging it.The sensor detects the angular velocity of this swing, and the solenoid valves operate accordingly, causing the water to drop to create wavelengths. To express these waves more dramatically, we built a structure in which the water shadow reflected on the wall.
Capturing the Audience’s Swing


At first, we used the radian value of the yaw axis. However, this was not enough to let solenoid valves work at the right time. This could be easily solved by using a touch sensor and making the audience touch it while they are swinging the rock. However, that never could be a natural input.


So we decided to use angular velocity and smoothed the values by averaging them. 
With this process, no touch was needed.

For visual harmony of the set, the covers of the solenoid valve and water pipes are resin-printed and nicely finished.
Plus, the metal parts of the valve were coated with silver spray.

This Planit likes warm breeze. Whenever he gets some wind, he dances with a delightful movement. To make him feel delighted, make some wind by blowing breathe to the spout of the kettle. If you blow with your mouth into the kettle, he will respond to you&#38;nbsp;by moving up and down reapetedly.

The key value we chose to take with us to the next universe, is the interaction between human and plants.
We focused on the nostalgic memories from childhoods. How do you feel when you think of childhood memories with plants?
The interaction between plants might have been felt like a magic, and sometimes, you might even thought that each plants are having a unique characteristics like humans.&#38;nbsp;We wanted to get the core interactions into a set of products, and make each set of plant have a unique characteristic that anyone can easily feel empathy to. Planit is a artificual plant cluster that reacts to human's interaction, and each plant has a different character.


	01 Form &#38;amp; Movement Study
We wanted to deliver the delightful movement of living plants. At first, we prototyped some fold structured papers with variations by shape, angle and materials. After some experiments, we’ve sought a more stream-lined, bouncy movement will fit better on our concept.


02 Movement study with servo motor

A more unique movement was found in this stage. We’ve attached a thread to both ends of the cut-off foam so that it can move up and down flexibly. The structure wasn’t solid by itself since it moved downwards in a irregular way. The center of gravity was moving continuously each time the servo moved.


03 Fixture


What we needed was a solid structure with a fixture to the center of gravity. The thread could be firmly fixed to the paper in this stage. Also, we’ve finalized our material in this stage by prototyping with various materials such as different types of papers, pelts, and the last to using Eva foam.

For Planit 1.SHY, we used tilt sensor and servo motor to get angle data from the kettle’s.&#38;nbsp;if(val==HIGH), servo2.write(180~0) &#38;nbsp;For Planit 2.WINDY, we used thermistor and continuous servo motor to get humidity data of the breathe.&#38;nbsp;

To give visible hints for interactions, we used two color for each interactions as signifiers : Purple and Skyblue Also, we used watering can as a device for input so that afford people to tilt it towards Plant 1. We used the inlet as a hidden input for Plant 2.

To recreate the umbrella handle, we discussed various possibilities based on human scale.We imagined the shape of heartbeat sensor-attached handle device which controls the direction of the umbrella.But after trying to make some mock-ups, we decided to make design that is more easy to grap and draw participants closer and create intimate mood.&#38;nbsp;
We also came up with different methods to make realistic rain scene. The device has to be tall enough to pour water above umbrella. Also we had to make at least one person’s shoulder wet. Most importantly, it had to be safe.&#38;nbsp;Various ideations were processed so that people can experience the reality-similar rain experience.

At first we came up with the common shape of umbrella handle but with size big and long enough for two people to grab. But it ended up as a trial as the handle was too big and quite banal.

Arduino Prototype

To make our first working prototype, we used servo motors, pulse sensor and some 3D printed objects.We tried to measure the heart rate, convert the value to BPM and make servo motors moves when BPM is up to 80.


Then, we succeeded in adjusting the tilt of the servo by connecting two heartbeat sensors.Through the scale mock-up,
We were able to control motor rotation based on heart rate values. We were able to try various ways to make water fall above umbrella.
 
We were able to figure out the degree of motor rotation to make people’s shoulder wet.


Making the Raindrops 


Ultrasonic distance sensorUsing a distance sensor, it allows people to enter the machine and create an environment where it rains. It rains when a person is detected within 20cm of the sensor. It is designed to operate by connecting distance sensor and servo motor that presses shower button.

Servo Motor No.1 for the on/off control of Rain Machine.The servo motor is designed to press the shower button, so that when a person enters the machine's operating distance, the button is pressed and it rains.

Servo Motor No.3 for the direction of waterdropThe direction and range of rain were very important to wet the user's shoulders. Both left and right users had to have their outer shoulders wet, so the shower itself was turned to change the direction of the stream according to the heart rate sensor value. Through this, it is designed to shoot water accurately in the direction (shoulder side) that needs to be aimed.

We needed a servo-motor that could withstand the weight of the umbrella, water and gravity. We found a servo motor that could support a load of 35kg and conducted various experiments on tilting the umbrella; such as wrapping fixed parts tightly using rubber bands and making sawtooth frames and moving them back and forth.

Two heartbeat sensors each receive a value, and the servo motor moves toward the lower value. If the value of the left sensor is small, the expression turns left.

Even if the servo motor turns under weight, all parts must be safely connected and the correct movement should continue. So, we used iron hinges for the motor parts, manufactured products that would fit the iron hinges separately with 3D printing and attached to the umbrella to connect the servo motor and umbrella.

In order to wet shoulders, the shower head had to rotate in opposite direction of the umbrella.&#38;nbsp;
The degree of rotation had to be carefully calculated to allow water to fall accurately down to the shoulder.&#38;nbsp;

We extended the square pillar to be in an adequate height for rain fall. Inside the extension, we hided components like arduino, water tank, shower pump.
To connect the heart sensor and umbrella, the wire was extended by soldering and then closed with a rubber hose. We colored the whole pillar white so that umbrella can look like it’s floating in the air.

Each part for control is installed in an optimal position to be protected from water, yet hidden from the user’s view point. All parts are waterproofed by using waterproofing spray.&#38;nbsp;

Due to size limitations, we set up our own shooting booth in the school hallway andvideotaped the whole set-up in action. For small components like 3d printed mock-up, we used studio for detail photo cuts.
