7. 消所(Soso)

消所 (Soso)
Soso is a device that regenerates memories at the beach.
The word ‘Soso’ is a combination of 消(disappearing) and 所(place, location, thing), indicating the disappearance of place, presence.

Inspiration

Beach
This project started with the experience of writing on sand at the beach. The words and sentences written on the beach are later slowly disappeared by the waves. The spot is covered again with new letters, and the letters are repeatedly erased. We wanted to capture these memories and interactions in Soso.

Finity
We wanted to focus on the finiteness of our memories and moments on Earth. Some things are more valuable because they exist just in the nick of time. In Soso, traces left by the user disappear almost immediately when they occur. We wanted people to look back at the finite, beautiful moments when using Soso.

Shape Changes

Soso is inspired by the beach waves and traces left in the sand. We designed the result in a streamlined form by simplifying the image and pattern of the intuitive beach.  Although the intuitive image of the sea is not expressed, users can recall their memories on the beach through the sound of motors, sand, and writing while using Soso.

Signifier & Affordance
Soso is a multi-layered form that gradually lowers the layer to the space containing the sand inside, inducing the user's concentrate. The wood stick and flat sand remind users of their past memories of writing on sand and make them use Soso.

Scenario

1
Pull out the branch stuck in the product and hold it in your hand. A branch that rises high on a white plaster plate serve as signifier to make users write or draw something on the sand.

2
Write or draw pictures on the sand. freely leave a trail on the sand, recalling the past memories of the beach. Writing on the sand will be Soso's input.

3
After a certain period of time, the servo motor at the bottom turns and the wing attached to the servo motor erases the handwriting. two servomotors, which run in a circle, blend with the curve of the plaster plate, giving the impression that waves sweep over the letters.

4
Put the wood stick used to write on the sand back into the hole. Users will visit Soso whenever they miss the memories of the beach. They'll be able to recall those memories.

Details

Mechanism diagram

1. Wood stick
The user will pull out branches and write or draw pictures on the sand.

2. 360` servo motor
As the 360-degree servo motor rotates, the motor’s wings circle the sand and erase the writing.

3. Ultrasonic sensor
When an ultrasonic sensor detects hands, it passes it to the servo motor so that the servo motor turns after a certain time.

Making process

Form, C.M.F prototyping

paper ver.1
paper ver.2
wood, formboard
plaster ver.1 ~ 6
plaster ver.7

These are prototyping that we proceeded to make final products. After working with paper and foam board, we decided to use plaster for the final work. Because uneven surface of the unprocessed plaster blends well with the texture of the sand, and the white color of the plaster makes the user fully concentrated to the sand.

Arduino prototyping

We wondered how to express the finiteness of the traces left in the sand. At first, we made a prototype that the sand slowly fell down and disappear, but it changed into current form in order to express waves and beaches more metaphorically.

After establishing the basic structure and form, we focus on on signifires and affordance. Through elements such as the texture of the sand and the shape of the plate, we tried to elicit the desired response from the user.

Final making process

1. 3d modeling
2. Laser cutting for molding
3. Make mold
4. prepare plaster dough

5. Combine plaster and water
6. pour the plaster into mold
7. make plaster harden
8. Remove Mold

9. Create rough form
10. Variation of modified scale and detail
11. Set Arduino Parts
12. Final

Soso is made of plaster. We made the drawing with 3D program, poured plaster into the Form board frame, and removed the mold. Since there are many trials and errors, we repeated it several times to make the desired shape.

The branch is a key signifier in soso. we tried to compare the shape, thickness, length, etc. of the branches and choose what was appropriate for writing and holding.
